Suriname Takes Bold Steps Toward a Data-Driven Future

Surinamese companies and government institutions are gearing up for a future where data drives decisions and growth. This vision was at the heart of the leadership seminar “Data as a Compass,” organized by Consulytic, which brought together executives, policymakers, and entrepreneurs to explore how data can become the guiding force for economic progress.

The seminar was inspired by the book Data as a Compass by Dutch data strategist Rob van den Wijngaard, who visited Suriname at Consulytic’s invitation.

Data-Driven Work: From Choice to Necessity

Opening the event, Minister Andrew Baasaron of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation (EZOTI) emphasized Suriname’s pivotal moment.
“With the anticipated developments in the oil and gas sector, companies must prepare for scaling up, international competition, and smarter decision-making. Data-driven work will no longer be optional—it will be essential,” the minister stated.

Leadership Over Technology

In his keynote, Van den Wijngaard stressed that successful data-driven transformation starts with people, not technology.
“The success of data-driven organizations isn’t about the volume of data or the sophistication of software,” he explained. “It begins with visionary leaders who inspire their teams to embrace learning and continuous improvement.”
He expressed optimism about Suriname’s potential:
“I see motivation, eagerness to learn, and a strong desire to build a resilient, future-oriented economy.”

Building Capacity Through Collaboration

Beyond the seminar, Van den Wijngaard conducted masterclasses for EZOTI and leading companies, focusing on data-driven leadership in government and business. These sessions highlighted ownership, collaboration, and the strategic role of data in modern operations.

Suriname Can Lead the Way

According to Bibi Mustapha, Operations Manager at Consulytic, the seminar signals the start of a broader movement:
“The world is changing fast. Surinamese organizations have the chance not just to keep up, but to lead. We support this transition with technology, knowledge, leadership, and sustainable partnerships.”

Van den Wijngaard concluded with optimism:
“Something remarkable is emerging in Suriname. The energy is tangible. This is a country ready to grow.”
